Barren County was among the 110 Kentucky counties that reported a higher unemployment percentage and was higher than the United States average in June 2024, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics, an agency within the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet.
According to information supplied by the center, Barren County reported unemployment at 5.3 percent compared to 4.8 percent that was reported in June 2023.
This is lower than Kentucky’s statewide unemployment average of 5 percent but higher than the overall United States rate of 4.3 percent.
These figures of county’s unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted, which can fluctuate based “due to seasonal events such as weather changes, harvests, holidays, and school openings and closings” and seasonal adjustment removes these variables making it easier to observe statistical trends.
According to the center and the cabinet, the statistics “are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working.”
“Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work,” the release states. “They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The data should only be compared to the same month in previous years.”
