One man is dead after a drowning at Barren River Lake, according to Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam.

Glasgow/Barren County Emergency Management stated they recovered the body of Mike Aurand at 9:40 a.m. on Aug. 26 after searching during the evening of Aug. 25 and the following morning.

Barren County Coroner Tim Gibson confirmed Aurand’s body is being transported to the medical examiner’s office in Louisville for an autopsy. Gibson said this is standard procedure.

Aurand initially went missing on Aug. 25 while swimming at Gilligan’s Island, which Gilliam clarified is a small beach on the Barren County side of the dame. Emergency Management stated units were dispatched to the area after Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Communications Center received a call “in reference to a male in the water that did not resurface.”

The first units that arrived on scene were from the South Barren Volunteer Fire Department who “made contact with friends and co-workers he was with and got details of last known location.” The units at the scene “searched for hours” on Aug. 25 before low light and poor visibility required them to pause the search and resume it the following morning.

Units from Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, Army Corps of Engineers, Barren County Rescue Squad, Austin Tracy Volunteer Fire Department, Allen County Rescue Squad, Barren and Allen County Sheriff units, Kentucky State Police, Hart County Rescue Squad, Barren-Metcalfe EMS, and Emergency Management personnel from Barren, Hart, and Allen Counties also participated in the search.
