In Barren County alone — a county with a population of nearly 45,000 — the office of the Kentucky State Treasurer reports $2.317 million of unclaimed property.

According to the treasurer’s website unclaimed property generally consists of payroll checks, unclaimed safety deposit boxes, old life insurance policies or vendor checks “that have remained unclaimed by their owners after several years.”

The website further explains that after a prolonged period of inactivity — usually three years, the website states — “banks and other financial institutions” turn in unclaimed property to the treasurer’s office. However, unclaimed property does not only Kentucky residents but can also affect local government agencies, according to the website.

Barren County’s total of $2,317,591.23 joins the nearly $800 million in unclaimed assets currently held by the Office of Kentucky State Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf.

An individual wishing to search for unclaimed property should visit the treasurer’s website and input the name.
