Barren River Lake to begin dropping Sept. 16

Barren River Lake’s water levels will soon begin dropping, according to the Louisville District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The corps announced recently that on Sept. 16 they would begin the fall drawdown with the goal of a one foot decrease in elevation by Oct. 15. After that, the corps stated, the plan is to begin the winter drawdown that brings the lake to 528 feet mean sea level.

At the time of publication the corps of engineers reported the lake was at 552.41 feet mean sea level.

The drawdown is part of their routine maintenance of the lake, which in vital is many aspects including recreation, flood control and water supply.
