A veritable bookstore renaissance is happening in Barren County as Nadine West Book Company prepares to open in downtown Glasgow.
Originally from Morgantown, Lynnette Brooks, who along with her husband Jason is the owner and operator of the soon-to-be-opened bookstore — located at 205 S. Green St — said this is truly a “family affair” with her two daughters also planning to divide their time at the store.
Brooks named the bookstore after her grandmother who was an avid reader until her stroke.
“She is in her late 90s [and] she had a massive stroke [a couple years ago] and it took away her ability to read…and that was a huge pastime of hers; she read as far back as I can remember,” Brooks said. “I was very happy to have her [reading] influence on me at a young age but also it’s also in memory of that pastime she lost. So the name has a lot of different connotations.”
Coming from a family of readers, Brooks said she wanted to create that “generational readership” as well.
“I just enjoy books so much and I want to be that person to help create that for others,” Brooks said. “We want to create generational readers. We want this to be a place where a grandmother and mother of a father and son can come.”
Brooks said the store will carry most book genres from romance, young adult and fantasy to nonfiction, classics and mysteries and have books available for children as well. In total, Brooks said, there will be about 3,000 books in the store when it opens. The bookstore has an official ribbon cutting on Oct. 16 at 11 a.m.
Nadine West Book Company and the incoming Hive will be connected, Brooks said, and as such the store is leasing the property from Zatt Properties for three years. Brooks said she has more community-oriented things — like community picks, some used books eventually, book clubs and writing seminars — in the works for the future.
The bookstore will be opened 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The store will offer books in most genres including cooking, young adult, romance and classics. Lynnette’s daughter joked the store is “a little Barnes & Noble Michael Crimmins/Glasgow News 1.

The store is connected to The Hive, which is also soon to open, and is similarly leasing the location from Zatt Properties.
