As of Oct. 14, the Barren County Road Department closed a portion Beechtree Lane and began clearing trees with the eventual goal of widening the section of the roadway from Fairview Lane to Kentucky 249, also known as Roseville Road.

The idea was first discussed during a Sept. 16 Transportation Committee meeting when the magistrates recommended the approval of a $13,500 bid for excavating and a $9,245 bid to Tarry’s Fencing.

At the Oct. 15 Barren County Fiscal Court meeting Jamie DeGroft, county road department supervisor, announced they had begun clearing the trees and as a result that portion of Beechtree Lane would be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily though, at the time of publication, does not know for how long.

“That way school buses can get through and everybody can get back from work,” DeGroft said. “We’ll work in that window [of time] everyday. I’m not sure for how long might be done this week; might be the next.”

Degroft said the plan is to widen that portion to roughly 20 feet with shoulders on either side. As discussed at the September meeting, and repeated by DeGroft, the plan is to pave the widened road but are waiting until the county receives funds from the County Priority Projects Program. DeGroft added that until paving shoulders of rock and gravel will be running beside the road.

DeGroft ended by saying it will be interesting to watch what the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet does with the roundabout at the intersection of Trojan Trail and Twyman Court as it could increase traffic on Beechtree Lane.
