Kentucky State Police catch parole absconder in Temple Hill

Kentucky State Police Post 3 announced they had located and apprehended 44-year-old Thomas Leighton Upton in the Temple Hill area on Wednesday, Oct. 16 after the elementary school resource officer reported an individual matching his description to the agency.

According to the press release, a trooper patrolling in the area made contact with Upton and arrested him.

Upton is currently lodged in the Barren County Detention Center on charges of third degree fleeing police, first degree wanton endangerment, possession of a defaced firearm and possession by a convicted felon, second degree hinderance, third degree terroristic threatening and second degree criminal mischief.

The press release further states 44-year-old Helen Vibbert, who was a passenger in a Chevrolet Trailblazer along with Upton, was also arrested for “obstructing governmental operations” while the unknown driver fled the scene and whose whereabouts are still unknown.

Kentucky State Police are still searching for 44-year-old Thomas Leighton Upton after a traffic stop in the Temple Hill area of Barren County on Oct. 15.

Interim Public Information Officer for Post 3 Allen Shirley said initially there were three people involved with the stop; one was a female who has been arrested and another being an unidentified individual. Upton currently has an active warrant for his arrest and, according to the Kentucky Online Offender Lookup absconded — or left suddenly or secretly — from his parole he began on Aug. 16, 2024.

Shirley said KSP troopers are conducting routine patrols in the area and, based on current information, there is no public threat.

Barren County Schools Communications Officer Heather Gardner said there is a school resource officer at Temple Hill Elementary School and is communicating with law enforcement.
