Barren County High School is one of the 130 schools that have been designated as a Kentucky Purple Star School.

Governor Andy Beshear established this designation in 2022 aimed at “help[ing] schools across the commonwealth provide the best possible resources for military families.”

“Kentucky has over 40,000 military children,”Beshear said. “These children make sacrifices daily so their loved ones can serve and protect our country. From deployment to relocation, these challenges can be difficult for families, but programs like this one can help. We are so grateful to our schools that have taken on the Purple Star challenge, and we encourage any schools that haven’t to get certified now.”

According to the program’s website, schools who are seeking this designation must meet four requirements, which includes setting up a Purple Star liaison within the school, attend and complete online training, host at least one military recognition event and make a military family resource page on the school’s website.

Barren County High School was awarded with this recognition in the spring of 2024.

“It is our mission at Barren County High School to ensure that all military-connected youth have the support they need to be successful in school and in life,” the high school’s website states. “We will support the Purple Star initiative to the fullest extent, and will be available to our military-connected youth and their families during regular school hours and beyond if needed.”
