Joe Paul Simpson, 81, of Shelbyville, passed away on Monday, the 9th day of December, 2024.

Born on the 25th day of June, 1943, in Louisville, he was the son of the late Joseph Tollie and Frances Edmondson Simpson.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Shelbyville. A graduate of Shelby County High School, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Cumberland College. Over the course of his career, Joe Paul was a teacher and coach, manager of the Shelbyville Monument Company, and worked for many years as a realtor.

He will be well- remembered for his outgoing personality and ability to talk to anyone, especially about sports. He was a longtime fan of the Shelby County Rockets, the Kentucky Wildcats basketball teams, and the Cincinnati Reds.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James David Simpson.

He is survived by his wife of over fifty-eight years, Bobbye Ann Simpson of Shelbyville. He was the proud father of his daughter, Jackie Benningfield, and her husband, John, of Glasgow, and the adoring Pawpaw to his two grandchildren whom he dearly loved, Andrew Simpson Benningfield of Louisville and Emily Kate Benningfield of Lexington. His survivors also include his brothers, Charles “Whitey” Simpson and his wife, Susan, of Springfield and Ernon Simpson and his wife, Susan, of Bowling Green; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., on Thursday, the 12th day of December, 2024, at Hall-Taylor Funeral Home of Shelbyville, with the Reverend Dan Reid officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 11:00 A.M., until 1:45 P.M., on Thursday, the 12th day of December 2024, at the Hall-Taylor Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Grove Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
