Barren County highs students — Emmaline Phelps, Brooke Gibson and Cole Young — are winners of the Kentucky second district’s Congressional App Challenge.
“The Congressional App Challenge gives students the opportunity to showcase what they have learned in computer science,” said Congressman Brett Guthrie. “I am proud to host this competition each year to inspire students to advance their coding skills and their interest in computer science careers through friendly competition.”
The trio won first place for their app Allergy Aware that will help people and families dealing with food allergies “by providing them with resources to safely manage their dietary restrictions.”
The winners of the Congressional App Challenge were chosen by a panel of local computer science experts and Allergy Aware will be displayed on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website with other winning apps from across the country.
The student team will be invited to join the Capitol Hill reception in Washington D.C. with app challenge winners from other congressional districts.
Danica Stephens from Glasgow High School placed fourth in the challenge for the app Serving Society that helps bring community needs to light.
