Kids in Barren County Schools may soon see new literacy programs thanks to a $1.5 million, five year grant that the district has applied for, according to district director of elementary instruction Michael Davis.
As stated in the Kentucky Department of Education’s request for applications, the Kentucky Comprehensive Literacy Grant “provides funds to support public schools, improve oral language, increase readiness for school, strengthen transitions between grade levels and improve reading and writing instruction and student literacy outcomes.”
Based on the district’s size they would receive $312,000 per year for the five-year duration.
Davis also mentioned that a requirement of this grant is partnering with local childcare centers to improve literacy there.
In March districts are supposed to receive preliminary notices of award.
