Kentucky teacher pay is 20 percent less than in 2008, according to new figures released from the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy.
Once adjusted for inflation that equates to $13,888 less than 2008, which culminates in a 19.8 percent decline. Dustin Pugel, the center’s policy director said this decrease in pay have contributed to the ongoing teacher shortage
“Lagging educator pay has affected teachers in every Kentucky school district and has contributed to a growing teacher shortage in the commonwealth, straining public school systems and making it more difficult for students to succeed in the classroom,” Pugel said. “The state hasn’t done enough to ensure our teachers and students get what they need and further reducing state revenue though income tax cuts this session will only make it more difficult to correct that in future budgets.”
This analysis from the center comes as 77 percent of Kentucky school districts had teacher’s pay raised above inflation by an average of $908.
Glasgow Independent Schools, Caverna Independent Schools and Barren County Schools teacher’s pay is based on years of experience and the degree of the individual’s educational attainment.
On the Glasgow Independent Schools’ teacher pay scale, a person would need to have at least a Bachelor’s Degree and 10 years of experience to make above the statewide average of $55,643. In Barren County Schools District, a person would also need a Bachelor’s Degree with 15 years of experience to make $2,000 above the average. Sticking to the Bachelor’s Degree prerequisite, a teacher in the Caverna School District would also need 15 years of experience to make above the average.
