The United States Postal Service will suspend its regular mail delivery, retail services and office activity on Thursday, Jan. 9.

This day-long suspension of most services is due to the national day of mourning that was declared by President Joe Biden due to the death of former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29, 2024.

“USPS facilities — including headquarters in Washington, DC, and area and district administrative offices — are included in the national day of observance and will be closed, except as needed for limited package delivery service,” the service stated. “Local managers will advise employees on staffing levels to maintain limited package delivery operations and prepare for the resumption of regular activities Friday, Jan. 10.”

Carter’s funeral is on Jan. 9 at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. and is expected to begin at 9 a.m. with Steve Ford — Gerald Ford’s son — Ted Mondale — son of former Vice President Walter Mondale — former Carter advisor Stu Eizenstat, Jason Carter — on of Jimmy Carter’s son — and Biden set to speak.

An invitation-only funeral for the former president is also schedule for 2:45 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia.
