Barren County has agreed to pay $50,000 to former parks director Maxie Murray, according to a settlement agreement and release, which was signed in December 2024 by Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd and Murray.

The 4-page document was provided to Glasgow News 1 following an open records request.

Murray alleged the county “discriminated against him by failing to pay him the amount he was due in violation of the Federal and state wage and hour laws.” The county denied the claim, but entered into a voluntary mediation with Murray that resulted in the payment of $50,000, which was via a check made payable to Murray and his attorney Alan Simpson.

By signing, Murray “releases and forever discharges” his claim, however, according to the agreement, the county does not admit wrongdoing. The agreement was signed by Murray on Dec. 16, 2024, and Judge-Executive Byrd on Dec. 17, 2024.

According to the agreement, Murray was presented with the agreement and thereafter “given a period of 21 days” to decide either to accept or reject the settlement. If accepted, Murray had seven days to revoke the agreement. Michael Owsley, an attorney at English, Lucas, Priest and Owsley, who was listed by name in the agreement, said he had received no revocation from Murray.

A search of the Kentucky Court of Justice website did not show any current lawsuits listing Murray as a plaintiff or defendant.
