Clarence Glover, a former Caverna High School athlete and member of Western Kentucky University’s 1971 NCAA Final Four team, is set to return to his home court for an event at Caverna High School on Friday, Jan. 31. Glover, a first-round draft pick for the Boston Celtics, will discuss his book Horse Cave to Houston: Pursuit of a National Championship, the first in his My Journey series.

Born in Horse Cave, Glover attended Caverna Schools, which had integrated while he was in elementary school. This milestone was made possible through the efforts of Newton Thomas, principal of the Horse Cave Colored School, and Ralph Dorsey, superintendent of Caverna. Dorsey, who also coached the school’s basketball team, played an integral role in Glover’s athletic career. Glover writes, “He was much more than just my basketball coach. He was also superintendent of Caverna Schools, my baseball coach, and my mentor. I always called him Mr. Dorsey and never Coach. ‘Coach’ did not project the full esteem of the position he held in my life.”

It was in Dorsey’s office that Glover accepted an invitation to play for the 1967 Kentucky All-Stars Basketball Team. “It was enjoyable being an All-Star teammate with these great guys. However, I doubted if our paths would cross again following the All-Star games,” Glover wrote.

Glover originally planned to attend the University of Florida, but after some coaxing from his All-Stars teammates, he chose Western Kentucky University instead. There, he and his team fought their way to the Houston Astrodome for the 1971 NCAA Final Four.

Following an extraordinary basketball career, Glover followed in the footsteps of his longtime mentor and transitioned into academia. He has worked as an educator, administrator, and coach, and is the namesake of WKU’s Clarence Glover Scholarship Fund.

The event is set to begin at 6:15 p.m., with the fitting backdrop of a Caverna basketball game. Glover is expected to discuss the inspiration behind his book series and the pivotal moments that defined his time as both a player and an educator.

His book series is available in both digital and print formats, and attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to access it.
