The Cave Area Conference Center will be getting a new fire alarm system and upgraded lights in the parking lot after both projects were approved by members of the Cave City Tourist and Convention Commission on Monday afternoon during its regular monthly meeting.

The commission approved a bid from Geralds Electric of $15,200 for new lights in the parking lot, and a quote from M and L Technical Systems of $31,000 for the new fire alarm system.

With the building being 40 years old, these improvements are in the name of safety, said Jennifer McNett, director of the commission.

“I know we’re spending a lot of money,” she said. “These are safety issues, so it’s not something we can really pick and choose.”

McNett said the current fire alarm system stopped working, and since it is outdated equipment, it could not be repaired. They contacted another company for a second bid, but never heard back.

“We reached out several times and haven’t heard back from them,” McNett said. “But it’s something we need to get taken care of as soon as possible.”

During discussion of these projects, McNett said Cave City Mayor Dwayne Hatcher had expressed his concern about the safety of the lighting situation in the parking lot and the other commissioners agreed that these issues needed to be addressed.

M and L Technical Systems’s quote on the new fire alarm system includes all of the equipment, drawings, installation and labeling, programming and initialization of control panels, system testing and customer training in operation and maintenance, according to a copy of the quote.

Geralds Electric’s bid for new lights in the parking lot includes removal of existing lights and the installation of 16 exterior wall mount lights, 21 pole mount parking lot lights, a bucket truck rental and some additional wiring, according to a copy of the bid.

The commission’s next meeting will be 1 p.m. on March 11.
