Members of the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission approved three sponsorship applications Tuesday, Feb. 11, during their regular monthly meeting.

Commissioners approved $5,000 for Entertain Glasgow’s Summer Concert Series, $1,500 for Barren River Animal Welfare Association’s second annual Derby Dog Festival and $850 for Kentucky Bass Nation’s High School and Junior Qualifier.

In other business, almost $12,850 was collected by the City of Glasgow for tourism in January. This number was higher than last year’s collection, said MacLean Lessenberry, executive director of the commission.

Entertain Glasgow’s free concert event, which will be on the fourth Friday of May at Beaver Creek Park, has an approximate budget of $20,000, and the $5,000 funding will help with marketing items such as signage, banners, apparel and website, according to a copy of the funding request application. Entertain Glasgow expects between 3,000 and 5,000 attendees at the concert depending on popularity of the artist, weather and other circumstances.

“Their events were really good,” commissioner Ale Gomez said of the concert series. “Great feedback.”

Other commissioners agreed that the concerts were very successful and brought lots of people to the area for the weekend. Lessenberry added that short-term rental hosts and hotel representatives told her there were a lot of out-of-state visitors during these concerts last year.

BRAWA’s Derby Dog Festival is a fundraiser that generated over $6,000 for the animal shelter at last year’s event, which had over 225 attendees, according to a copy of the funding request application. The event, which features various activities for dogs and dog-lovers, will be April 26 at Barren River Lake State Resort Park. The $1,500 funding will be used for advertising.

Gomez said she attended the inaugural festival last year and that “everyone was really excited for it.”

Kentucky Bass Nation’s fishing tournament is a qualifier for the state championship and participants may earn a spot in nationals as well as scholarships as they advance, according to a copy of the funding request application. The event features 80 to 120 teams and “a lot of parents travel with these teams,” adding that over 70 percent will book at least one night stay in the area, the application states. The $850 in funding will help pay for banners and jerseys that will list event sponsors.

Commissioners said this fishing tournament brings a lot of children to the lake.

The commission’s next meeting will be 1 p.m. on March 11.
