With the severe weather that has traversed Barren County, and much of the commonwealth, Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd declared a state of emergency thereby allowing the county to receive federal and state assistance.

Byrd said the declaration is primarily for roadway repairs and maintenance.

At the Feb. 18 Barren County Fiscal Court meeting, Deputy Judge-Executive Garland Gilliam said he has already reported around $310,000 in damages to the state, which will then report it to Federal Emergency Management Agency. He added that most of the state and federal focus is on eastern Kentucky, which was impacted by the severe weather to a greater extent than was Barren County, so it was too early to discuss specifics.

On Feb. 15, Governor Andy Beshear announced President Donald Trump had granted an emergency disaster declaration for Kentucky.

In his 11 a.m. briefing on Feb. 18, Beshear announced the severe weather death toll had increased to 14 people.
