Colonels cage Tigers, 66-42

The Caverna Colonels played in a regional tournament game for the first time in seven years, and won there for the first time in 21 years.

It was defense that set the tone for the Colonels in their 66-42 win over Bardstown on Sunday at Marion County High School. They trailed 19-13 headed into the second quarter, but held the Tigers to two points in the quarter.

At halftime, Caverna led 28-21, in the Boys’ Fifth Region Tournament opener at Marion County High School.

The Colonels opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run through the first two minutes to tie the game at 19-all. Jaylin Craine gave his team the lead for good with a runner in the lane with 4:01 left in the second period. Baskets by Craine and Tyson Martin stretched the lead to 25-19 before Bardstown scored its first basket of the quarter.

The Tigers scored the first three points of the third quarter, before Craine took over. He hit two shots in the lane, then hit two free throws to pushed the Colonels ahead 34-24 with 4:56 left in the third period. Caverna led 46-33 after three quarters.

The Colonels outscored the Tigers 20-9 in the final period to set the final score.

Caverna plays against defending regional champion Adair County on Monday, March 17, at 4:30 p.m. central time at Marion County.
