Barren River Lake still above summer water levels

Two weeks after the severe weather that battered the commonwealth, Barren River Lake is still above the new record water level.

At last check the lake’s pool level was 586.04 feet mean sea level, which surpasses the new record set of 583.6 feet mean sea level that was set on April 7, according to the Louisville district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Looking at the lake’s height from that record-breaking day to April 17, the water has continued to rise surpassing 584 feet on April 8, 585 feet on April 9 and 586 feet on April 15. Previously, the corps estimated Barren River Lake “could reach between 586 and 587 feet mean sea level.”

“For context, normal Summer Pool at Barren River Lake is 552 MSL and the Spillway Crest is 590 MSL,” the corps stated. “We do not anticipate spillway flow.”

On April 15, the corps stated the lake, when at summer pool height, covers roughly 10,000 acres and at 586 feet the lake’s coverage is approximately 18,655 acres.

The National Weather Service forecasted a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, April 20.
