Students led the way down the halls of Barren County High School to the newly finished Courageous Cup. It was opening day for the new venture.

The Courageous Cup is adjacent to the mild/moderate disabilities classroom. The grand opening was celebrated Friday, May 2, with numerous community members, district personnel and Barren Inc. representatives.

Barren County High School Principal Letitia Hughes said she was “thrilled” with the grand opening and that it furthers the high school’s “inclusive community and culture.”

“This student-led shop is nestled right in…a space where our students already feel safe, supported and seen…. What’s happening here is big,” Hughes said. “[These] students are stepping into real-world roles — baristas, cashiers, greeters — and gaining skills that will serve them far beyond these walls.”

“Every job in the coffee shop was created to help our students grow in confidence, communication and independence…. It’s not just about pouring coffee, it’s about pouring courage into every cup,” she added.

Student Evan Kuhnke shared Hughes’ excitement at the opening and gave a shout-out to his coworkers and friends.

Director of Special Programs Christa Middleton said they added a coffee shop because the kids where already serving coffee from their classroom and this would increase space.

“They had ran a small coffee shop out of their classroom for several years, on and off, and that was just difficult to do because of the limited space…so the fact that we could make this a well-organized coffee shop for [the students] to practice their skills was definitely needed,” Middleton said.

The district is still working out some of the details, but Middleton said right now the Courageous Cup would be open twice a month from 7:45 to 9 a.m. It will be available to students and employees, at least for right now, she added.

Coffee prices range from $1 to $3. Middleton said the money will go back into the coffee shop with the ultimate hope being self-sufficiency.
