With Mother’s Day this Sunday, Barren County High School agriculture students are selling plants they grew in the two greenhouses located behind the school.

The sale will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today and Friday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

“This time of the year, we try to produce a crop where we can open up our doors and welcome some community members in to see if they want to purchase any flowers and vegetables that we’ve grown,” said Andy Moore, agriculture teacher and FFA adviser at the high school. “We’ve got two greenhouse classes — one kind of get things going in the fall semester and then the spring group comes in in January and they fall right in and do a lot of seeding and transplanting.

“They learn the process of how to grow the plants.”

Wednesday afternoon, Moore’s final class of the day arrived at the greenhouses and several students began the process of watering the plants.

Freshman Brailey Scott said they have the responsibility of checking to see if any plants “are dry or look like they need more water.”

“Making sure that we get all of our plants watered and that they look good,” Scott said. “Make sure they look fresh in the morning.”

Cambree Lile, another freshman in the class, said they have to be prepared for anything as they walk around the greenhouses and inspect the plants.

“It’s something different every single day,” she said. “But we’re always ready to do it.”

Lile said she really enjoys the class and the opportunities it provides.

“Just being in here and getting to actually work in the greenhouse,” she said. “Just getting out here and doing things and knowing that it’s benefiting the community.”
