Barren County Schools Board of Education members approved a 3 percent raise for all full-time employees during their regular meeting Thursday night at the district’s central office. They also raised the starting salary for custodians to $14.50 per hour.

Over the past five years, the district has raised staff wages by 19 percent.

Superintendent Amy Irwin said educators and staff members are the district’s most valuable asset, and these salary increases help Barren County remain competitive locally and regionally. She then thanked the school board members for their continued support.

“That is a clear investment in our people, our classrooms and in the future of Barren County Schools, and the quality of education we provide for all students,” Irwin said. “It sends a powerful message to each and every staff member that you value them and know that their service is so important to our students every day.”

To comply with Senate Bill 181 — a new Kentucky law that puts restrictions on communication between school employees and students — the board approved the designation of several traceable electronic systems to be used for district communication.

Board chair Shelly Key Groce said she supported this new legislation.

“I think it’s a good bill,” she said.

In other business, the board approved to use Sherman Carter Barnhart for architectural services for a 5,000-square foot addition to the Barren County Area Technology Center. This project, made possible through a 4-million dollar construction grant, will add new space for Industrial Maintenance classes.

The board entered into a closed session, but returned without taking any action.

At the beginning of the meeting, the board recognized several students and staff members: Matt Sexton, a teacher at North Jackson Elementary, was named the Certified Employee of the Month. The Classified Employee of the Month was North Jackson Elementary custodian Brandy Brown. North Jackson’s Lily Key was named the Student of the Month.

The board also recognized the following Student Volunteers of the Year: Asa Young of Austin Tracy Elementary; Adalynn DeVore of Eastern Elementary; Addison Davis of Hiseville Elementary; Marlie Cash of North Jackson Elementary; Keedan Blair of Park City Elementary; Brogan Houchens of Red Cross Elementary; Levi Mudd of Temple Hill Elementary; Zoe Poynter of Barren County Middle; and Bella Boston of Barren County High School.
