The magistrates of the Barren County Fiscal Court approved a contract with Sports Facilities Companies to conduct a feasibility study on a proposed regional sports complex.

At a special-called fiscal court meeting Friday morning, Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd showed the magistrates three bids her office received. One bid was from Pinnacle Indoor Sports, which was unofficially shown to the administration and budget committee earlier in June, another from The Sports Facilities Companies for $25,000 and one from TPMA for $23,410.

Byrd said The Sports Facilities Companies was the one used by the city of Madisonville.

Magistrate Brad Groce made the motion to accept The Sports Facilities Companies bid, commenting that the county couldn’t “get state money without a study.” Fellow Magistrate Tim Durham seconded the motion, and Magistrate Tim Coomer was the sole vote against.

Byrd added that she hoped to get $5,000 towards this study from both Barren County tourism and from the Barren County Economic Authority.

Byrd said she would sign the contract today, June 27, and the study should be completed by August.

The sports complex — deemed regional due to an interlocal agreement with Metcalfe County, is going to be constructed on 15 acres of the old Johnson property off Cleveland Avenue that was recently bought by the city of Glasgow.  It will include four basketball/volleyball courts, three pickleball/tennis courts, multiple turfed areas — labeled as pitching/batting cages in the drawing — some multipurpose areas and a soccer/football field, according to the current layout.
