As the summer months firmly set across Barren County and the United States, the American Red Cross is once again calling on people to make a blood donation.

The American Red Cross states donations tend to slow down during the summer as people go on vacations, schools are out and normal schedules are disrupted, leading to low donation supplies. Regional Director of Communications with the Kentucky Region of the American Red Cross Amber Youngblood said the July 4 holiday adds to donation challenges.

“The American Red Cross is calling on type O donors especially to give blood now,” Youngblood wrote in an email.

There is currently an “emergency need” for type O blood donors — O-negative blood being the universal donor and O-positive being the most common blood type and can be transfused to any positive blood type — though all blood types are needed, the Red Cross states.

A blood drive is scheduled for July 7 from 2-6 p.m. at the Lera B. Mitchell Clubhouse, another scheduled for July 21 at River Lake Church from 1-6 p.m., another the next day from 1-6 p.m. at Glasgow Baptist Church and many others that can be found here.

As a “thank you” for donating, people will receive an “exclusive pair of Red Cross x goodr sunglasses” and those who donate between July 15 and July 31 will get a Fandango Movie Reward by email, according to the Red Cross.
