The federal government is withholding over $1 million in projected funding from Barren County Schools that had been previously approved for the current fiscal year that began July 1.
During the board of education’s monthly meeting on Thursday, July 10, Barren County Schools Superintendent Amy Irwin said Kentucky Education Commissioner Robbie Fletcher gave an update to all Kentucky superintendents that the U.S. Department of Education is withholding federal funds “that were previously approved.”
“So there’s not really a clear timeline yet,” Irwin said. “While some grants remain fully funded, others are pending review and we will continue to keep the board updated as we receive word from KDE.”
According to Finance Director Joe Murley’s report to the board, the funding that Barren County Schools was projected to receive amounts to over $1 million dollars.
When breaking down the numbers, Murley said this funding was for migrant education, supporting effective instruction, English language learners and supporting student academic enrichment, with over $600,000 of those funds being used for staff salaries.
Irwin said the district will continue to meet with the Kentucky Department of Education “and follow their lead on any updates.”
