The City of Glasgow’s annual offering of a central location for its residents to drop off household hazardous waste as well as paper materials that need to be shredded is coming this weekend.

Grant funds cover the cost of the service, so there is no charge to participating residents. The event is meant to keep hazardous substances out of the Glasgow Regional Landfill – or, worse, in illegal dumps where they can leach into the soil and water sources beneath it – and routed instead into proper disposal methods and to allow the city’s residents to safely and securely dispose of a variety of types of paper-based items, including mail with personal information in it or things like “preapproved” credit offers that someone else could use to establish fraudulent accounts. The shredded paper is then recycled.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the “back” parking lot of Beaver Creek Park; that’s the one where the fire training tower is, to the east of the softball complex, along Beaver Trail.

City and/or company personnel will be on hand to help with unloading. Here’s a breakdown of what will or won’t be accepted for each situation:

Acceptable items for the household hazardous waste drop-off include aerosols, oil-based paints and solvents, herbicides and pesticides, batteries (mixed), fluorescent lamps, sharps and medical waste, mercury devices, TVs and electronics, propane cylinders, cooking oils, fuels, pool and photography chemicals, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

What will NOT be accepted at the HHW drop-off are latex paint; explosives, flares, ammunition and weapons; radioactive or industrial waste; large appliances, tires and yard waste; business waste; 55-gallon drums; or oversized cylinders.

For the shredding service, items that will be accepted are paper documents, flyers, brochures, phone books, newspapers and file folders with no metal. Staples, regular paper clips and rubber bands are OK to leave among the papers, but binder clips must be removed.

What will NOT be accepted for shredding are plastic, cardboard, binders, hardcover books, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks.
