All 40 members of the Glasgow Police Department recently received a free opioid overdose kit from the Barren County Health Department.
Each kit contains a CPR/Face Shield, latex gloves, Narcan, Fentanyl and Xylazine test strips.
Glasgow police currently have Narcan boxes located at the police substation on Park Avenue, a department press release stated, and all supervisor vehicles are equipped with Automated External Defibrillator devices.
In 2024, the Barren River Area Development District announced nine overdose deaths for Barren County, making second in the district behind Warren County, which had 27 deaths.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stated Narcan — naloxone, ” a drug antagonist that reverses the effects of opioids” — can be life saving in pre-hospital settings when an overdose occurs. The National Institute of Health stated that the drug antagonist’s “administration during resuscitation efforts serves as an important component in [emergency personnel’s] response to opioid overdoses.”
“Some of the signs of an Opioid Overdose may include a person that can’t be woken up, breathing slowly or has stopped, snoring or gurgling sounds, pupils are tiny, or eyes are rolled back, or the body is limp,” the department press release stated. “If you see someone that has possibly overdosed, please call 911, give Narcan if available, if instructed give breaths and stay until help arrives.”
