From pharmacist to chief executive officer and founder of a pharmaceutical wholesaler Steve Shirley is amazed by the continued success of R&S Northeast, which he attributes to the people.
Born and raised in Barren County, then 25-year-old Shirley opened the company in 1982 on a 50-acres farm he owned in southern Barren County near Fountain Run. That warehouse was 30-by-60, which is 1,800 square feet, and it’s a far cry from the 62,000-square-foot building R&S Northeast expanded into on Aug. 21.
Shirley said after adding onto the 30-by-60 building five times and being “totally out of space,” the company bought an existing facility on American Avenue in Glasgow roughly a year ago and brought it up to “pharmaceutical standards.”
The company will retain the facility in southern Barren County, but Shirley said most of the workers will work from this new building — though a few will split their time between the two.
“If we fill this [building] up, it would double the amount of employees we’d have to have,” Shirley said. “We’re just going to be about half right now, so we’re set for the future with this.”
The new facility will not be a packaging facility, Shirley said.
