Barren County Schools Board of Education members approved the working budget for the 2025-26 school year during their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 11, at the district’s central office.

Finance Director Joe Murley said 76.2 percent — or about $32.48 million — of the budget is for personnel.

“Which I think is something to be proud of,” Murley said. “We invest in our people as a district.”

After the meeting, Superintendent Amy Irwin told Glasgow News 1 that the district values “putting high-quality people in our classrooms, in our cafeterias, on our busses.”

“We’re very proud,” Irwin said. “Proud of our school board for investing in our people knowing that that brings higher quality to the services we provide students.”

The board recognized several people at the beginning of the meeting: Pam Carter, an instructor at Barren Academy of Virtual and Expanded Learning, was named the Certified Employee of the Month; Melinda Owens, director of counseling at BAVEL, was recognized as the Support Staff Employee of the Month; Auden Thomas, a student at BAVEL, was named the Student of the Month; and James Brown, of Commonwealth Broadcasting, was recognized for his work over the years covering high school sports.

Due to fall break, the next school board meeting is set for Oct. 16.
