The Friends of Barren River Lake is hosting its annual Lakeshore Cleanup Day from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday, Sept. 20, at Barren River Lake State Resort Park.

The organization is requesting volunteers to collect lakeshore trash, pontoon boats and drivers — to shuttle volunteers, not trash — and jon boats with drivers to transport trash.

Those who want to participate can meet up at any of the following boat ramps: Port Oliver, Walnut Creek, The Narrows, State Park or Baileys Point. Free lunch will be provided as well as gas cards for boat drivers.

Missy Towel told WCLU Radio this week that one of their organization’s missions is “to keep the natural beauty of Barren River Lake,” adding that the lake has a drainage area of about 940 square miles, so that means it gets trash from everywhere.

This event gives community members an opportunity to give back to the place they love, Towel said, and for kids, this provides them with model behavior of environmental stewardship.
