After the announcement of Park City Mayor Larry Poteet, resigning on Sept. 18, city commissioners convened in a special-called meeting to accept the resignation and plan for the coming days.

Park City Commissioner, and the city’s mayor pro temp, Mike Burgess called the meeting to order at 5 p.m. with commissioner Gary Carroll being the only absence.

“We’ve just come together tonight to announce the resignation of Larry Poteet,” Burgess said. “We wish Larry all the luck in the world as he runs for [Barren County] jailer.”

The city has 30 days to fill the mayoral vacancy before the governor’s office “promptly” makes an appointment, according to Kentucky Revised Statute 83A.040. It is expected that Burgess will be sworn in as interim mayor at the Oct. 6 commission meeting, according to commissioners Donna and Angelo Scavo. At the Sept. 2 meeting, Poteet tapped Burgess as a potential successor.

Once Burgess has been sworn in as mayor, the commission will have another 30 days to appoint a new commissioner to fill his seat.

The commissioners have begun to seek candidates provided the candidates are of age and a resident of the city. Residents who are interested in being appointed can contact city hall or one of the commissioners directly.

Burgess said that he will continue to prioritize communication and transparency with the public and his commissioners. The commission is also optimistic that ongoing projects, such as the new city sign and the amphitheater, will not be affected by the changes to leadership.

The commission accepted Poteet’s resignation and no further action was taken Thursday.

Park City’s next regular scheduled meeting is set for Oct. 6.
