The Barren River District Health Department, Need More Acres Farm and the Allen County Health Department Board of Health have received $44,000 from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

The project aims to “address health concerns in South Central Kentucky by promoting the consumption of Kentucky-grown specialty crops among individuals at risk of developing diabetes,” a press release from the department stated.

Funding for this project comes from a $345,544.81 total allocated to the state agriculture department as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program, which was authorized by the 2018 Farm Bill.

The Barren River District Health Department serves residents of Barren County, and Need More Acres was one of the farms Barren County Nutrition and Afterschool Programs director CheyAnne Fant said was used by the district to procure local food for students.

“Specialty crops make up a significant part of Kentucky’s agricultural economy and through these grants the Kentucky Department of Agriculture is…able to provide assistance to our producers to grow that production,” said Kentucky Department of Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell. “These funds will allow new and unique opportunities for Kentucky farm families.”

You all do realize that the picture you used is of Dennison’s Farm in Hart County and not Need More Acres in Allen County? You should probably use a picture from the correct farm if you are not going to talk about the one that is in your picture in the article.
