Barren County parents of children with disabilities can apply for grants to help pay for medical services that traditional insurance plans do not cover.
Nearly 11,000 children in Kentucky under the age of 21 have disabilities, according to disabilitystatistics.org.
United Healthcare is offering these medical grants “to bridge the gap between high fees for specialty medical services and a family’s ability to pay them.”
The grants can be used for a variety of services including therapy, prescriptions, medical devices or the cost of major surgeries.
Parents can apply for an annual $5,000 grant for each of their children, but the funds are capped at $10,000 over a child’s lifetime.
Scott Otto, assistant executive director of the United Healthcare Children’s Foundation, said the goal of these grants “is to help alleviate the financial burden that a family might be enduring, where their commercial coverage may not cover, or may not fully cover, the cost of the needed care.”
The foundation has awarded more than $80 million in grants since the program launched in 2005.
