All seven Barren County Fiscal Court Magistrates ratified seeking bids on a produce and perishables cold storage facility.

Unlike the grain storage facility that the county recently announced, the cold storage would be bid and constructed through the newly formed Barren River Agriculture County Coalition, the interlocal agreement of which was signed by the magistrates during the June 27 fiscal court meeting.

The coalition consists of Barren, Hart and Allen counties and Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said the plan is to build a facility in each of the member counties.

Byrd said the bids will seek a consultant to assist in the project.

She added that no work on any facility has been done yet, but that the plan is to construct the Barren facility first.

During the meeting, Byrd said these facilities would help growers that travel in order to store their produce save of expenses.

“There is a major need in the three counties [and in] our region for storage for vegetables and fruits,” Byrd said. “Our farmers are taking their product numerous miles away from here — the logistical costs are very expensive and storage fees are off the charts.”

“This is a great project. It is one of [The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s] top projects in Kentucky,” she added.
