The day set aside to honor military veterans in every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces is approaching.
Veterans Day is a federally recognized holiday each year on Nov. 11; the date the armistice was signed that effectively ended World War I. The first commemoration of this day was in 1919 with the original concept to have a day “observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m.,” the Department of Veteran Affairs stated. In 1954 the holiday was renamed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
Glasgow and Barren County will be host to numerous events, including the annual Veterans Day Parade in Glasgow beginning at noon on Nov. 11 and the 6 p.m. Veterans Day Dinner at the Glasgow National Guard Armory. The keynote speaker for both of these events will be Lieutenant Colonel Jason Simpson, who resides in Glasgow with his family, according to information provided by Matt Mutter.
South Central Bank will have its annual Veterans Day breakfast on Monday, Nov. 10, beginning at 7 a.m. and lasting until 9 a.m. at the operations center at the intersection of S.L. Rogers Wells Boulevard and Cleveland Avenue. The breakfast is free for veterans.
Before the official Veterans Day, there will be a celebration at the one-room schoolhouse in Freedom, Kentucky, located at 13000 Tompkinsville Road. That celebration will be at 10 a.m. on Nov. 8, Mutter said.
