A sexual assault that allegedly occurred in a Walmart restroom was deemed illegitimate, according to the Glasgow Police Department.
Glasgow Police Public Information Officer Terry Flatt said officer and Criminal Investigations Division detectives “immediately initiated a thorough investigation” into the alleged assault on Feb. 4.
“As the investigation progressed, digital and physical evidence were obtained that refuted the legitimacy of these allegations,” a police press release stated. “Allegations of this nature are incredibly serious and need to be thoroughly investigated before conclusions are made…our agency investigates many reports of sexual assault. The overwhelming majority are legitimate crimes involving real victims. False reports negatively impact other victims who want to report their trauma, while also undermining public trust and diverting critical emergency resources.”
The department also cautioned people from speculating through social media, stating that it can cause “unwarranted fear, public outrage, and unfairly discredit the professionalism and training of responding officers.”
