The Cave City Police Department is warning residents and local businesses about a scam circulating in the area involving callers impersonating law enforcement officers.
According to a statement released by the department, scammers have been contacting individuals and falsely claiming to be with state police. During the calls, victims are told they have missed jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.
The callers then attempt to pressure victims into making a payment through Cash App or other digital payment platforms in order to “freeze” the supposed warrant.
Police emphasized that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not contact individuals to request payment for missed jury duty or warrants.
Officials advise anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and contact their nearest law enforcement agency to report the incident.
Authorities say the warning applies to both residents and businesses, as scammers have reportedly contacted multiple types of targets while attempting to collect fraudulent payments.
