Local historian Sam Terry will lead his 32nd spring series of tours at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery beginning Saturday.

The guided walking tours take place in the older, historic section of the cemetery and focus on the people who helped shape Glasgow and Barren County.

Glasgow’s cemetery was originally organized and maintained by the Odd Fellows fraternal order. Some of the earliest interments are from 1875 and there are family graves that predate the organized cemetery.

Standing on the grounds and seeing gravestones and monuments can help visitors connect local buildings, landmarks and family names to the stories of the people behind them, Terry said during an interview on WCLU. Many of the people discussed on the tour lived in earlier eras and had significant impact on the development of the city and county.

Terry said he did not intend for this spring and fall event to be what it has become.

The cemetery tours last about 1 hour and 10 minutes. This spring’s dates are scheduled for Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m.; Sunday, April 12, at 2 p.m.; and Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m., all at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.
