Area gardeners have a low-cost way to kick off their spring planting this weekend at the annual plant and seed swap.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. until noon at the UK Cooperative Extension Office at 1463 West Main St. in Glasgow.

The swap will feature thousands of plants and a wide range of categories, including herbs, perennials, annuals, bushes, vegetables, wildflowers, ground covers, biennials and bulbs, according to Edie Bell. There will also be flowering bushes such as azaleas, day lilies, lily of the valley and more unusual herbs like the so-called toothache plant, along with popular kitchen staples like elephant garlic and multiplying onions.

The event is designed to give local gardeners an affordable way to diversify their gardens, Bell said in a recent WCLU interview.

Attendees may bring plants to trade or simply purchase what they need. They can bring up to 15 healthy, pre-potted plants, which will be exchanged at the door for trade tickets. Those tickets can then be used inside the swap area to pick out the same number of plants to take home.

For shoppers, pricing has been kept simple. There will be only two prices: small pots marked with a yellow circle will cost $1, while pots marked with a blue circle will cost $3. At checkout, volunteers will tally the colored stickers so buyers know exactly how much they owe or how many tickets to turn in.
