A portion of East Main Street was closed Wednesday afternoon as Glasgow police negotiated with a man who had barricaded himself in a residence.

Police were called to do a welfare check on a man who then barricaded himself inside a house near the intersection of East Main and Lakeview Drive, according to police department public information officer Terry Flatt.

“We communicated with him the entire time and we do have him in custody,” Flatt said after the nearly 3-hour situation had ended.

He said the roadway was closed from Gorin Park to the Houchens IGA in order to allow police officers to work to convince the man to leave the residence.

“We want to say thank you to everyone in the 700 block of East Main Street for remaining inside, and to everyone else who avoided the area,” Flatt said. “That allowed our officers to do their job without any other incidents.”

Flatt said the police office did contact the Glasgow School District to alert that the roadway would be closed, and access to streets in that area off of East Main was restricted. The road closure started about 2:30 p.m., which was in the same time frame as buses would be delivering students to their homes.
