For sports fans who passionately wear burgundy and gold attire, Dewayne Miller should be a familiar face.
He’s the man who rushes out onto the field or court when players go down in pain. Though he is retiring from this position.
“He’s been our athletic trainer for the last 30 years,” Barren County Athletic Director Warren Cunningham said during last month’s Barren County Schools Board of Education meeting. They were recognizing Miller for all his years of service.
“Some of you all have come through Barren County High School as athletes, or maybe you’ve had siblings or children that are athletes,” Cunningham said. “And you’ve probably had some interaction with him.”
The athletic director said Miller has been “an integral part of our athletic program.”
“He’s had such a positive impact on student-athletes, on families, on coaches,” Cunningham said. “He’s been a great asset to Barren County High School and to our athletes and their families.
“We hate to see him go, but he spent countless hours at practices, at games, over the weekends.”
Miller would work extra hours to make sure student-athletes got the treatment they needed, Cunningham said.
“I know a lot of times he has come in on weekends to evaluate some of our student-athletes,” the athletic director said. “Maybe to give them treatment to try and get them back as safely and as quickly as possible.
“It’s hard to measure all the things that he has meant to our athletic program. But he’s been a great asset to our students, to our athletes and our coaches as well.”
Cunningham said the district is “sad to see him go,” but they want to thank Miller for all his time and dedication.
