Mammoth Cave National Park saw an increase in visitors to the cave in the month of May compared to last year.
“Very positive numbers,” said Jessie Cooper, in her parks report to members of the Cave City Tourist and Convention Commission during their regular monthly meeting on Monday at the Cave Area Conference Center.
“We’re excited about those,” she said.
According to her report, the cave saw just over 57,500 visitors last month, which is 14.5 percent higher than May of last year. Surface visitation was just over 2,000, which was a 25.2 decrease from last year.
“All in all, the month ended up 12.2 percent higher than the same month last year,” Cooper said.
For 2026, total cave and surface visitation is nearly 218,000, which is 13 percent higher than the same timeframe in 2025.
Cooper spoke about upcoming events including a night sky evening program and star party behind the visitor center on June 20. She also mentioned the park is planning events for Mammoth Cave’s 85th birthday on July 1, but more information will be released at a later date.
“We have good progress on all the projects ongoing in the park right now,” she said. “The hotel parking lot project is moving along nicely. We have the Frozen Niagara Road Reroute. That project has resumed.”
Cooper said both of those projects may cause temporary pauses in traffic flow, but delays should not be more than around five minutes. She recommended visitors plan for an extra few minutes of travel to make sure they get to their tours on time.
