The Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library in Glasgow gave kids and adults a chance to build, play and learn through its LEGO at the Library program. The hands-on event invited participants of all ages to take part in a dinosaur-themed building challenge using LEGO bricks provided by the library. Teen and Tween Program Director Savannah Ortega said the idea for LEGO at the Library came from community requests for more LEGO activities and from staff members’ desire to see kids creating together. She said the program is open to everyone, from the youngest builders to older participants, and that it has been popular as a way to spark imagination using simple materials.

For this session, participants were asked to build an enclosure strong enough to protect a small LEGO dinosaur. Once the structure is finished, staff members toss a baseball, which they call a “meteor,” at the build to see whether it holds up. Ortega said many of the creations have successfully withstood the so-called meteor strikes, and that it has been fun to watch the different approaches kids take to solving the challenge.

The library runs LEGO at the Library as a monthly drop-in program, typically from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the school year. Builders can stop by during that window, spend time working on their designs and leave their creations on display at the library. According to Ortega, the displays stay up for the rest of the month so library visitors can vote on their favorites.

For the dinosaur challenge, participants will receive a mini LEGO dino to take home as a souvenir of their work. All materials are provided by the library, and organizers say community members only need to bring their ideas and enthusiasm. Library staff report that the program is designed to encourage creativity, problem-solving and community connection in a playful setting.
