Kentucky State Police Post Three says it will conduct a series of safety traffic checkpoints in Barren County in areas with a higher rate of serious crashes. Troopers plan to focus on finding impaired drivers and making sure drivers and passengers are properly restrained.
According to KSP, officers will be checking for children who are not secured in appropriate child safety seats and for drivers and passengers who are not wearing seat belts. The agency says the checkpoints will be placed in locations that have seen a high ratio of crashes resulting in injury or death, compared to relatively low use of seat belts and other restraints.
In Barren County, planned checkpoint locations include US 31W at the Edmonson County line and at the Hart County line. Other US highway sites include US 31W at KY 255, US 31E at Jack Turner Road, and US 68 at KY 255 in the Bon Ayr area. State routes listed by KSP include KY 70 at KY 314, KY 70 at KY 255, and KY 70 at KY 740 near Hiseville. Additional checkpoints are planned for KY 1846 at Old Lexington Road, KY 249 about one half mile south of the Glasgow city limits, and KY 249 at the Monroe County line.
KSP officials say the checkpoints are intended to increase public awareness about the importance of seat belts and child safety seats while removing impaired drivers from the road. They also emphasize that the locations may see delays while checkpoints are underway, and drivers are urged to use caution and allow extra time when traveling through those areas.
