A long-term project to improve safety and efficiency along KY 90 Happy Valley Road in Barren County is moving forward. Officials say the work focuses on a nearly 9-mile stretch of the highway between Sanders Street, at mile point 0.2, and the U.S. 68 Veterans Outer Loop, at mile point 8.5.

The project is designed to ease congestion and cut down on risky passing by adding alternating passing lanes along the corridor. New turn lanes are also being built at different points to help with access and reduce the chances of rear-end crashes.

Transportation officials say the work does not stop there. Crews are making drainage improvements in selected spots to help move water away from the roadway and protect the pavement. The plan also includes guardrail work, shoulder improvements and extensions of some existing passing lanes. Vegetation trimming is taking place in areas where overgrowth could interfere with visibility or roadside safety.

Drivers in the area are being reminded to stay alert for workers, equipment and changing traffic patterns as construction continues. According to officials, the KY 90 Happy Valley Road project is expected to be completed later this year, weather and field conditions permitting.
