Caverna Independent Schools is getting an early start on back-to-school preparations with a “Cram the Cruiser” school supply drive this Friday, July 17. The event is designed to help stock the district’s Family Resource and Youth Services Center before students head back to class in mid-August.

The drive will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at two locations in the Cave area, according to Terry Smith from the Caverna Family Resource and Youth Services Center. Volunteers will be set up outside the Cave City Dollar General at 299 E Happy Valley Street, and at the Horse Cave Family Dollar at 985 E Main Street.

Community members can drop off new school supplies they already have at home or purchase items inside either store and bring them out to the collection area. Smith said they are grateful to the participating stores for providing convenient locations and a wide selection of school items.

The center reports that basic supplies are always in high demand, including pencils, notebooks, paper, highlighters and crayons. Smith said classrooms go through a large number of crayons and other basics during the year, making early donations especially helpful.

Hygiene items are also a priority. The center is asking for hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes and tissues, which staff say help teachers keep classrooms clean and ready for learning.

Smith described the Family Resource and Youth Services Center as a “jack-of-all-trades” that works behind the scenes to remove barriers for students and families. Staff may help families connect with housing assistance or jobs, provide school supplies, or even keep clothing on hand for students who need a change during the day.

Local law enforcement agencies, including departments in the Cave area, are partnering in the “Cram the Cruiser” effort by helping promote the event and assist with collecting donations. Local radio stations, like WHHT and WCLU, are also involved in supporting and publicizing the drive.

For residents who do not have time to shop, cash donations will be accepted at both locations. Organizers say they can then purchase needed items directly from the stores to make sure students are ready for the first day of school.
