The former Masonic Lodge in Park City is set to become the home of a new locally owned store after commissioners approved a lease agreement Monday with Small Town Girls.
The store, owned by Commissioner Bonita Martin and resident Tammy Shaw, will feature merchandise from local crafters and is expected to open in late summer or early fall.
Some work remains before the store can open, primarily electrical and plumbing improvements, according to Mayor Donna Scavo. At last month’s commission meeting, Shaw showcased a resin table inlaid with peacock feathers as an example of the type of locally crafted items the store will feature.
The lease agreement was approved with little discussion.
Commissioners later entered a brief closed session to discuss bids for electrical work needed at the lodge. After returning to open session, the commission approved hiring Glasgow-based BluTech Electrical and Mechanical for approximately $6,000.
Commissioners also approved the first reading of an ordinance adopting Barren County’s animal control ordinance, which was approved by the county earlier this year.
Scavo said that with code enforcement responsibilities now falling under her position, having the support of animal control will help ease some of the workload.
The commission is expected to formally adopt the ordinance during a special called meeting Thursday, where a second reading is scheduled.
During public comment, Miss Betty’s Restaurant owner Jonathan Cross asked commissioners to consider lowering Park City’s 3-percent restaurant tax. Tourism Director Linda Watts said the rate is the standard amount allowed under state law. No action was taken, though Scavo said the commission would consider the request.
Commissioner Gary Carroll presented the Park City Fire Department’s monthly activity report, which included 36 responses. Those calls included eight medical emergencies, 16 canceled runs, one structure fire, five motor vehicle accidents with injuries, two vehicle fires, one gas leak, one mistaken dispatch and two negative contacts.
The department reported no non-injury motor vehicle accidents or field fires during the reporting period.
No reports were given for maintenance, planning and zoning or tourism.
Commissioners are scheduled to meet again Thursday, July 16, for a special-called meeting to consider the second reading of the animal control ordinance. The commission’s next regularly scheduled meeting is set for Aug. 3 at 5 p.m.
