Houchens Industries founder Ervin G. Houchens has been named a 2026 inductee into the Kentucky Entrepreneur Hall of Fame, according to a release from Awesome Inc.
Houchens, a longtime Barren County businessman, opened his first grocery store, Houchens Foods, in southern Barren County on Jan. 1, 1917.
That small southern Barren County store eventually grew into Houchens Industries, a diversified company that now spans multiple sectors.
More than 100 years after its founding, Houchens Industries comprises more than 13 companies, according to the organization. The businesses operate in areas including construction, retail, manufacturing and insurance.
The company remained under Houchens’ leadership until his retirement in 1983 at age 85, when his nephew, Ruel Houchens, became company president.
According to the company’s website, Houchens Industries generates more than $4 billion in annual revenue. The business is employee-owned through an employee stock ownership plan, or ESOP, giving workers a direct stake in the company’s performance.
Houchens is one of four inductees in the Kentucky Entrepreneur Hall of Fame’s 2026 class. The other members of the class are John Neace of Neace Lukens and Neace Ventures; Roger Griggs of Richwood Pharmaceuticals and Pharmaceutical Corporation; and Purna Veer of V-Soft Consulting.
The formal induction ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 4 at Central Bank Center in Lexington.
