The Barren County Board of Education approved every item on its latest meeting agenda, including new tax rates and a working budget for the 2026-27 school year.
Board members voted to adopt tax rates of 62.6 cents per $100 of assessed value of real property, and 67.4 cents for tangible property for the upcoming school year while also approving the district working budget and a district facility plan.
The board authorized multiple construction-related actions, including a BG-4 for Barren County High School masonry work with Blue Ladder Construction Inc.
Members also approved Summary of Payments No. 34 for various Barren County High School projects under BG#23-126, along with Summary of Payments No. 6 for the Barren County Area Technology Center addition project.
In other business, the board declared several items as surplus property for resale, including preschool chairs, instructional materials and a transportation truck.
The board also approved the 2025-26 technology activity report and continued contracts for nutrition services with the Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA, as well as an architect contract for the area technology center and Head Start full utilization.
Board members signed off on several instructional and student-related items, including the second reading of a revised dyslexia policy, approval of fall fundraisers and three shortened school day or shortened week accommodations for students.
The board also approved out-of-state and overnight student travel.
Trips include Barren County High School students attending the Kentucky FFA Rising Sun Leadership Conference in Hardinsburg on Sept. 11-12, 2026, and SkillsUSA students traveling to Washington, D.C., Sept. 25-30, 2026, for WLTI leadership training.
The meeting featured several recognitions highlighting staff and student achievements.
Barren County High School teacher Josh Phelps was honored as Certified Employee of the Month for “Initiative and Skill and Knowledge Mastery,” while Shely Thomas was named Classified Employee of the Month for “Teamwork and Collaboration.”
High school student Joseph Douglas “JD” Mills was recognized as Youth Service Center Student of the Month for “Initiative and Effective Communication,” and support services recognition went to technology staff member Cooper Alls.
